Why Marble is the Epitome of Opulence
Marble is a metamorphic rock which is made up of recrystallised carbonate minerals, usually calcite or dolomite. Pure white marble is the result of metamorphism of a very pure limestone or dolomite protolith.
History of Marble
Before it was used for the traditional marble basin, or for marble floor tiles, marble was used in some of the finest pieces of art in ancient times. Marble is usually associated with the classic artistic objects. Not only was the Parthenon of Athens created out of marble, but so was the Taj Mahal and other grand palaces and structures around the world.
This beautiful and luxurious rock was used extensively in the ancient world for artistic purposes such as architecture and sculpture.
The Greeks often considered the best sculptors of the ancient world, referred to it as the “shining stone.” Various types of marble have been used to create art, however, pure white marble was the most preferred by ancient artists to produce masterpiece work such as Venus de Milo which was sculpted in Greece around 130 B.C.
This fine-grained white, known as Penteli marble, was quarried around the Penteliko Mountains of Athens. Maybe the most famous white marble, Parian, of the ancient world hails from the Greek island of Paros.
Marble from Italian peninsula was also a very popular type of marble used for artistic creations as well as for buildings. Michelangelo’s masterpiece sculpture David was sculpted with Carrara marble during the Renaissance. Carrara (near Florence) marble is either white or bluish-gray.
